January 21, 2011 marks the inauguration this great monthly event, Film Night At The Square, with a red carpet event which includes wine, fashion, and film in downtown Lodi.

Calaveras County deputies arrest suspected gunman

CALAVERAS COUNTY - Calaveras County sheriff's deputies arrested a man suspected of shooting at deputies Monday afternoon.

Richard Cooper, of West Point, was arrested around 7:30 p.m. in a home in the Wilseyville community after police searched for him for nearly four-and-a-half hours.

Two deputies tried to pull over Cooper near Highway 26 because they suspected him to be a parole violator. Deputies said Cooper ambushed them by using a shotgun to fire at the patrol car.

One deputy suffered minor injuries after the suspect shot at the window.

Cooper then ran into the woods nearby. Deputies set up a perimeter to search for the gunman. Deputies set up roadblocks on Railroad Flats Road and on Highway 26.

Deputies said Cooper had a criminal record.

Lodi kicks off 'Film Night at the Square'

LODI - The Lodi International Film Festival Committee will kick off its inaugural "Film Night at the Square" event on Friday, Jan. 21 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Lodi Mayor Bob Johnson at 5:30 p.m.

Film enthusiasts and supporters who attend the event, located at the Hutchins Street Square Theater, will enjoy several independent films, a fashion show, musical entertainment and fine wines from local wineries.

Each month, the committee will host special events featuring independent films and filmmakers. Tickets for the monthly events are $20 and can be purchased online or at the door.

The first Lodi International Film Festival, scheduled for Aug.

Boys Wrestling: Lodi 55, Bear Creek 13

LODI, CA - The Lodi Flames boys wrestling team defeated Bear Creek 55-13 Thursday night.

The Flames travel to Chavez on Thurday. The Bruins host Lincoln in two weeks.

Girls basketball: Lincoln-Stockton 66, Lodi 36

LODI, CA - The Lincoln Trojans girls basketball team remained undefeated by beating the Lodi Flames 66-36.

The Trojans (13-0) will host Kennedy this Saturday. The Flames (10-8) will travel to Bear Creek on Tuesday.

Lodi police to hold DUI checkpoint Saturday

LODI - Police officers will conduct a DUI/Driver's license checkpoint on Saturday, Jan. 15 at an undisclosed location within city limites between the hours of 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.

Officers will be checking drivers through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol or drug impairments as well as checking for proper licensing. If officers suspect a driver has been drinking, a field sobriety test will be conducted. If you fail, expect jail, vehicle storage fees, license suspension, insurance rate increases, along with fines, DUI classes and other expenses that could exceed $10,000.

Lodi Sikh Temple celebrates 'LOHRI' festival

LODI - The Lodi Sikh Temple, located at 12098 North West Lane, will host "LOHRI," the festival of fire on Thursday, Jan. 13 from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

The festival, a cultural and traditional event commemorating the new year, is celebrated in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajistan in India. Revelers gather around the fire and distribute sweets while singing traditional songs. The event also marks the start of longer daylight until April.

Lodi Grape Festival hosts E-Waste recycling collection

LODI - The Lodi Grape Festivalwill host its annual electronic waste recycling event on Friday, Jan. 14 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 15 from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Lodi fairgrounds located at 413 East Lockeford Street. Vehicles should enter at Gate 2.

Items accepted at the drop-off collection event include computer monitors, laptop computers, CRT screens, printers, televisions, plasma screens, LCD screens, cell phones, fax machines, copiers, computer towers, keyboards, telephones, calculators, stereos, speakers and microwaves.

No batteries or fluorescent lights will be accepted.

Proceeds from the recycling event will benefit the Lodi Grape Festival Bucks for Books Scholarship Fund. The festival will be held on Sept. 15-18 this year.
