Arrested man's death investigated by San Joaquin D.A.

LODI, CA - The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office will be investigating the unexplained death of a man who stopped breathing while in the custody of Lodi police.

Lodi police Lt. Chris Piombo said officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Elgin Avenue at approximately 3:20 Monday afternoon for a report a man had entered a woman's home without permission. Piombo said the woman told police the man, who she didn't know, came in through an unlocked front door and sat down on her sofa. She demanded the man, identified as Roy Winn, 35, to leave and he ran out of the house.

Officers found Winn moments later lying on the ground and conscious on the 200 block of East Kettleman Lane, Piombo said.

Officers took Winn into custody on suspicion of trespassing, prowling and being under the influence of a controlled substance. The suspect was breathing and able to enter the patrol car on his own, police said.
