Tokay High School student has active TB

A student at Lodi's Tokay High School tested positive for active tuberculosis (TB), San Joaquin County Public Health Services reported Monday.

The student is receiving medical care and the public health department says there is no longer any risk of exposure to other students and staff.

Still, public health staff has scheduled TB screening tests for students and staff who shared a classroom with the affected student.

The school sent letters to the parents of all students.

TB is a contagious bacterium that is transmitted through the air. Droplets with TB bacteria can become airborne when a person with TB disease coughs, talks, or sings. These droplets are inhaled by other people and infection usually requires significant (many hours), not casual, contact when the person is infectious, according to public health services.
